These synthetic materials are made by converting porous carbonate skeletal material of marine life into a phosphate skeletal material possessing a microstructure substantially the same as or corresponding to the microstructure of the carbonate skeletal source material by subjecting the carbonate skeletal material to hydrothermal chemical exchange with a phosphate.
