Fuels containing sulphur are purified by (a) partial combustion or (b) full combustion, at 800.degree.-950.degree.C in a bed of CaO and/or MgO which combines with the sulphur. The sulphurized CaO or MgO is reactivated by contact with a regenerator gas at 1,000.degree.-1,150.degree.C with the evolution of SO.sub.2. Vanadium and sodium removal from the fuel is enhanced by the presence of iron and alumina, respectively.
