A liquid coating composition is formed by copolymerizing without gelation, 50-95 parts by weight of a methyl methacrylate lacquer-giving monomer component and 5-50 parts by weight of a polymerizable addition reaction product obtained by the addition reaction of an .alpha.,.beta.-ethylenically unsaturated acid and an epoxy compound. In those instances where a polyepoxy compound (e.g., diepoxide) is used, the addition reaction is controlled to the extent that a sufficient amount of monoester and an insufficient amount of diester are formed so that substantially no gelatin occurs during copolymerization and/or formation of the coating composition. Films are formed from the coating composition which exhibit excellent durability, impact resistance, shrink resistance, and gasoline resistance.
