An intervertebral disk arthroplasty device adapted to replace a disk between a first vertebra and a second vertebra in a spine, the arthroplasty device comprising:a first member for engaging the first vertebra having a first joint surface, a first posterior end and a first anterior end, the ends defining a transverse midline therebetween, the midline being equidistant from the first posterior end and the firstanterior end;a second member for engaging the second vertebra having a second joint surface facing the first joint surface, and second posterior and anterior ends juxtaposed with corresponding ones of the first posterior and anterior ends; anda ball and socket joint between the first and second members defined in the first and second joint surfaces and disposed between the midline and the first posterior end, the ball and socket joint configured to permit relative rotation between the first member and the second member about a first axis parallel to the transverse midline and a second axis perpendicular to the first axis and lying in a sagittal plane of the spine, in which one of the first and second joint surfaces is inclined away from the ball and socket joint toward its respective first or second joint member, entirely around the joint, and the other of the first and second joint surfaces is substantially planar around the joint.
