PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surgical instrument having a firing bar capable of maintaining an accurate space between clamped jaws of an end effector and facilitating articulating movement of a shaft.SOLUTION: A surgical stapling and severing instrument, suitable for laparoscopic and endoscopic treatment, clamps tissue between the end effector of a long channel and an anvil pivotally opposed. An E-beam firing bar moves distally through the clamping end effector to severe the tissue and to staple each side of the severed tissue. The E-beam firing bar affirmatively spaces the anvil from the long channel to assure closed staples even when an amount of the clamped tissue is inadequate to space of the end effector. In particular, an upper pin of the firing bar longitudinally moves through an anvil slot and a channel slot is captured between a lower leg and a middle pin of the firing bar to assure a minimum space.
