PURPOSE: To give the excellent to corrosion resistance against fluorine-containing gas by composing the material of a shaped brick of Al2O3 and TiO2 and constituting it with a fired material forming acicular TiO2 crystal. CONSTITUTION: The brick is formed and hardened after combining >50 wt.% Al2O3 and 2.5-10 wt.% TiO2 and mixing a binder. If necessary, the firing is executed to manufacture the refractory material. This material undergoes the process of forming the acicular TiO2 crystal and the crystal containing TiO2 during acting fluorine-containing gas to the free surface, particularly, to the boundary surface of intergrain hollow space at 700-1000°C in the zone exposed with the fluorine, and the crystals are grown in porous space in irregular state. The brick formed from this material has about 10-35 vol.% porosity and about 5-120 MPa pressure resistance. This brick is used for an electrolytic vat.
