The products may be aftertreated to introduce ionexchange or chelate groups into the polymers for use as chromatographic packing. In examples glass particles are acid treated to increase the hydroxyl content, reacted with trichlorovinyl silane or triethoxyvinyl silane and copolymerized with propylene, isobutylene, styrene, maleic anhydride, butadiene or trichlorovinyl silane. Excess halosilane groups are hydrolysed and reacted with dichloropropane; the styrene polymer is cross-linked by further polymerization with divinyl benzene. The styrene polymers are also sulphonated or chloromethylated and aminated.
