[Also in Division G2j To make an interference coating deposited on the concave surface of a mirror 21 vary in thickness from a smaller value at its centre to a greater one at its edge, each mirror 21, which is a surface of revolution, is rotated about its axis 32 while material 23 is deposited on it by evaporation from a crucible 20 displaced laterally with respect to axis 32, and is simultaneously rotated about another axis 28 inclined with respect to axis 32. Right hand mirror 21 is shown passing through a position where its interior is completely shielded and the left-hand one is undergoing maximum deposition. Between these positions the amount deposited depends on placing within the concave surface. Mirror holders 26 rotate at 20 times the speed of carrier 24.; Coated mirrors made according to the invention may be employed as cold light mirrors, and may have 15-20 layers of deposited material of alternate retractive indices.
