[Also in Divisions B1 and C6] A membrane for the fractionation of alcoholic beverages is formed from a dispersion of cellulose acetate in acetone containing magnesium perchlorate and is provided as a coating on the inside surface of a porous tube 3À129 cm. long and 1À27 cm. internal diameter. A pressure differential of 850 1b. per sq. inch is maintained between the inner part of the tube and its outer surface for the reverse osmosis of the alcoholic beverage. According to a further disclosure, a membrane prepared from a dispersion of cellulose acetate in a mixture of acetone and formamide is supported in a stainless steel reverse osmosis cell, a pressure of 500 1b. per sq. inch being applied to the active surface.; Sheets or tubes formed from cellulose derivatives may be treated, e.g. by esterification or urethane formation, to give the permeability characteristics desired.
